IR6 Game Report from a Talthain/Paverain Perspective

by Dani Zweig
The Early Game

This is going to be a report from a very Talthain-centric point of view.

Talthain started with two Overlords - Wayne was near Talthain Castle and I was near Riftwatch - and Ben played a Hero, optimized for a run of excellent starting-high-level-seer adventures. (There was an apprentice, but he lasted quick.)

Ben played a dazzling opening game. With no prestige pooling, he grabbed enough prestige to snatch up half a dozen module cities early. Here's a track of his early progress:
- Turn 5 (after first production): 24 effective prestige, 5 modified influence.
- Turn 8 (after second production): 42 effective prestige, 13 modified influence.
- Turn 11 (after third production): 64 effective prestige, 29 modified influence.

The map was sparsely populated. Factions started with three players, which made them very vulnerable if one player dropped, and lessened the initial competition for resources. Umbria and the Arcanes were not in the game, and Ben was able to influence Narviel and Umbris early. Vol would have been competition for Umbris, but Brad dropped early, leaving Bernie and Bjorn with an unviable faction.

The Search for Allies

We started looking for a joint-victory partner fairly early - about six months into the game. With so few players, it felt as if the three-player-team game would be a slog, and there was a real prospect of winning the game in about a year with a good alliance. (When you have a long, unpopulated, and paved trade route, and lots of module cities, armies are not a problem.)

We approached the Guardians first, but they didn't respond. (We found out, belatedly, that they were waiting a long time for one of their players to answer email, but we didn't know that.) The Clans could also have been a good option: We had started to negotiate with them early, but one of their players played hardball and insisted on concessions, so that fell apart. Paverain was a good choice: Just as we had a long uncontested stretch of land in the south, they had a long uncontested stretch in the north.

The other viable factions were the Elves and Nagashun, neither of them of compatible alignments. (Holy Order was in the game, but they were playing a solo game, not competing.) The Clans turned out to be the main competition: The Elves never got organized, and Nagashun never got viable trade routes or allies.

Mistakes Happen!

It could have been over in a year, but we squandered opportunities:
- We had an opportunity to eliminate Nagashun before they took Rok Tathgar, but the player who was to attack delayed a month in order to go after some lairs.
- We sent an army to take Far Haven, and then, instead of retreating, it (okay, I) puttered around until the Clans could send someone to slaughter it. (The same thing happened with the second army I commanded that went after the Clans. This is either a trend or coincidence.)
- We sent a 30,000-soldier army against the Clans and, through a misunderstanding of the Rift, marched it into the Rift.
- We sent the cloud castle to rescue the army from the Rift - and didn't guard it well enough, so the Clans were able to capture it from us.
- Ben had to drop, because of an attack of Real Life, and his cities were not maintained.

Victory at Last

We finally beat the Clans through brute force and numbers.

The Elves didn't coordinate with the Clans when it mattered, and we were able to pick them off with a couple of spare armies.

Nagashun had Rok Tathgar. Fifteen thousand soldiers behind those walls, commanded by the Overlord, might hold off a hundred-thousand attackers. But we had a hundred-thousand soldiers, and we started making attrition attacks when seventy-five thousand of them were outside the wall. I don't know how long it would have taken, but five thousand of their Dark Assassins were in a guild - and Fabian realized that he could challenge for the guild.
